Too frequent use of detergents and scents during pregnancy and postpartum can harm the health of the baby. This is stated in a new study published in the European Journal of Pneumology.
To reach these conclusions, scientists conducted surveys in which more than seven thousand children and their mothers took part. Mothers had to fill in a questionnaire on the frequency of use of different preparations in their home and vehicles - disinfectants, carpet cleaners, air fresheners, stain cleaners, etc.
Children have been tested for skin allergies and their lung condition has been checked.
The results show that children whose mothers often used chemical products to clean while pregnant are more likely to have problems with their lungs than other children.
It is not yet clear which ingredients in detergents are causing problems, but specialists give a few tips on how to protect yourself and your family from potential problems.
- Always follow the instructions for use printed on the product itself and use protective gloves.
- Aromatize your car with orange or lemon peels, and essential oils, not with artificial substitutes.
- Replace, wherever possible, the chemical preparations with tested homemade recipes for cleaning. You know that sometimes they are more effective.
